Permanent Facial & Body Hair Reduction with LightSheer® DUET™ in Toronto, ON
While facial and body hair control is a part of most people’s grooming regimens, it doesn’t have to be tough, frequent, or tedious. If you’re fed up with the repeated cycles of waxing, plucking, shaving, threading, or harsh chemicals, it may be time to consider laser hair removal at our Toronto area practice in North York.
We use the LightSheer® Duet™ by Lumenis, one of the most advanced FDA- and Health Canada-cleared devices for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair. As the gold standard in laser hair reduction technology, LightSheer® Duet™ is performed by our trained and experienced laser technician and supervised directly by the dermatologists at North York Dermatology Clinic. Our patients love the treatment due to its effectiveness, safety, and convenience.
Our technician can perform laser hair removal treatments with our LightSheer® Duet™system on nearly any area of the body. Our patients have opted to reduce the thickness and density of unwanted hair on a variety of areas, such as person’s face, legs, underarms, bikini line, back, and other areas.
While a series of multiple treatment sessions may be required to accomplish your hair reduction goals, many say they wish they had gone through with laser hair removal treatment sooner. It is by far one of the safest and most common dermatological treatments.
Quick, Convenient, Economical & Environmentally Friendly
While laser hair removal treatment sessions may come with an upfront price tag that is higher than other hair removal methods, the savings over time is well worth it, as it translates to significant savings on razors, wax appointments or at-home kits, or other hair removal tools.
Not to forget, a fair part of your grooming routine shaved down! All that time and mental energy you put into hair taming can now be spent on more meaningful experiences. Shaving razors and wax strips out of your routine will also reduce your carbon footprint over time.
Common Treatment Areas
While laser hair removal can be performed in almost any area of the body, typical treatment areas include:
- the upper lip and chin
- legs and arms
- underarms
- chest and back
- fingers and toes
- bikini or Brazilian areas
Laser hair removal is not recommended for eyebrows or the immediate areas surrounding the eyes.
Advantages Specific to Laser Hair Removal with LightSheer® Duet™
The LightSheer® Duet™ system comes with two handpieces: LightSheer® HS and LightSheer® ET.
- High-speed vacuum-assisted technology with LightSheer® HS: Vacuum gently draws the skin closer to the laser’s handpiece, allowing for better precision and for reduced pain, as the suctioning effect activates pressure and tactile skin receptors to dampen the transmission of pain.
- Chilltip™ technology with LightSheer® ET: the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) is protected by contact cooling. Continuous cooling significantly reduces any discomfort or pain. Contraction or compression of the skin upon cooling also rotates the hair follicle closer to the laser surface for greater effectiveness.
- Efficiency when it comes to both time and energy
No topical cooling or anesthetic is required; therefore, prep time and overall treatment time is reduced.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal involves a laser light of a customizable wavelength to target melanin in the hair follicle. Using melanin like a bullseye eye, the light energy passes through the skin and attacks each hair follicle with a highly concentrated, focused beam of light that converts to heat, which is absorbed by the pigment there.
You will be asked to stop tweezing, waxing, or other regular hair removal activities that can alter a follicle’s growth cycle prior to each laser hair removal session. Since the laser targets this specific part of the hair, it must be fully intact at the time of the treatment. As well, patients may be advised to avoid tanning in the days leading up to a treatment, since laser hair removal technology is pigment-based.
With this in mind, the best candidates for laser hair removal tend to be individuals with dark hair and light skin, as its effectiveness is limited for light blonde or red hair colors, and the laser cannot fully distinguish between melanin in skin vs hair. However, patients of varying skin colors and types may be treated safely and effectively with the customizable settings of the LightSheer® Duet™.
Patients with certain hormonal imbalances maybe advised to treat such conditions before moving forward with laser hair removal, as they could affect results. As each patient is unique, a consultation with an experienced laser hair removal provider is necessary to determine realistic patient goals, the number of sessions required, laser settings, and other important and necessary treatment customizations.
Multiple laser hair removal sessions may be necessary due to the fact that this treatment destroys follicles when hair is actively growing (anagen phase) – however, not all of your hair actively grows at the same time! The laser needs to catch all of the unwanted hair in a particular area at the right stage of growth, so you may need anywhere between three to 10 treatment sessions spaced several weeks apart in order to get the best results.
What to Expect from a Treatment Session
Before the procedure begins, the areas that will be receiving treatment will be trimmed or shaved, and the laser settings will be adjusted for the individual patient. The areas will be marked or stenciled to ensure even coverage with the laser. You may be provided eye goggles to wear during the procedure.
The technician will run the handpiece over the treatment areas as it emits pulses of light to target the hair follicles. The amount of time per session is highly dependent on the size of the areas to be treated.
Over the next few days, you may notice your treated hairs falling out. Although sunscreen should be used every time you head out during the day, it is particularly important after treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation.
Laser Hair Removal Results
Laser hair removal results are often immediately noticeable after the first session, but it is important to attend all recommended treatment sessions in a consistent manner to ensure the best possible results.
Those with darker, thicker hairs tend to see the most significant improvements, but even if a few light wispy hairs remain after all sessions are complete, these tend to be few and far between, and much finer, inconspicuous, and slower-growing than before.
