Refresh & Rejuvenate Your Skin in Toronto, ON
Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face and neck. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. After a chemical peel treatment at our Toronto, ON practice, the regenerated skin is usually smoother, more even in tone and texture, and as a result, more youthful-looking.
Chemical peels help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dullness, and skin imperfections. These solutions accelerate cell renewal to reduce the signs of photo damage and stimulate collagen synthesis. A series of four to six treatments, each every two to four weeks, is recommended to achieve optimal results, after which maintenance treatments every six weeks may be appropriate.
A chemical peel can:
- Improve skin tone, texture, and firmness
- Diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Relieve acne-prone skin
- Revitalize sensitive skin
- Decongest pores
After a chemical peel, skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so wear sunscreen every day. It should say “broad-spectrum” on the label, meaning it protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Also, it should be a physical (mineral-based) sunscreen above SPF 30. Limit your time in the sun and wear a wide hat.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
While fair-skinned individuals with light hair tend to be better candidates for chemical peels, those with darker skin can also experience noticeable results depending on the type of skin concerns being addressed.
Note that chemical peels may not be able to adequately address bulges, sagging, and more severe wrinkles in the skin. To address such concerns, injectable and laser treatments may be more appropriate. Our staff can discuss this in further detail during your consultation upon closer examination of your skin.
Before Receiving a Chemical Peel
It is important that you inform our staff of any history of scarring or recurring cold sores. We may also request you stop taking particular medications or treatments prior to receiving chemical peels.
What to Expect After a Chemical Peel Treatment
Depending on the type of chemical peel used, you may experience a reaction similar to a sunburn in the days following the procedure. This may include redness and/or scaling that typically resolves itself within three to seven days after your treatment. Mild repeat treatments may also follow at spaced-out intervals to achieve the best possible results.
After-effects of medium to deep chemical peels may also include swelling and the formation of blisters that may break, crust, and eventually peel off after seven to 14 days post treatments.
As the new skin exposed postpeel may be fragile, it is important that you continue to use sunscreen and follow all post-chemical peel care instructions we provide.
